Alice Elizabeth Nye devoted nearly fifty years to teaching English literature in Laredo, Texas, where she inspired thousands of students through her dramatic readings of classic literature. Teaching in predominantly Hispanic classrooms throughout much of her career, she believed literature could bridge cultures, encourage critical thinking, and open doors to opportunity. Her commitment to education, equality, and intellectual curiosity continues to resonate with readers interested in women's history, educational history, Hispanic heritage, and stories of perseverance.
Alongside her work as an educator, Alice also served as a journalist, documenting events and contributing to the public conversation in South Texas. Alice Elizabeth Nye Sorrell roared as an English Lit teacher in Laredo, Texas, from 1931 through 1980, while performing a dual role as a Journalist for the local Hearst daily newspaper, the Laredo Morning Times. She amazed her Mexican-American pupils with dynamic readings of Chaucer, Lord Byron, John Keats, and Percy Bysshe Shelley.
Written by her son, Sterling N. Sorrell (a retired Texas and Colorado lawyer and Rice University graduate), this memoir chronicles her life as a widowed single parent, early feminist, and radical humanitarian whose ancestry traces back to 1635 Cape Cod and Republic of Texas pioneers.
